Having vivid dreams lately? What about an increased sensitivity to sound? Noticing synchronicities like repeating numbers all over the place? Well my friend, congratulations! Your Third Eye could be opening.
WHAT IS THE THIRD EYE?
The Third Eye is an arcane and somewhat mystical idea first utilized in ancient Indian traditions. Buddhism and Hinduism sported this concept as an essential element related to our bodies in the form of energy. It is thought to be a entry way between the spiritual domain and humans. When this gateway is opened, it then grants us access to a position of higher of consciousness.
As the Third Eye rules over the pineal gland (responsible for secreting melatonin to make us sleepy) the spiritual duty is said to dole out Prana or Divine Energy to the other parts of ourselves.
WHERE IS THE THIRD EYE LOCATED?
Centered in the middle of the forehead, the Third Eye is also known appropriately as the “Brow Chakra” or the Ajna Chakra. Many classical depictions of Lord Shiva, for instance, shows his Third Eye located here.
WHY IS MY THIRD EYE OPENING?
As someone who believes in Divine Timing, I would have to agree with the notion that the Third Eye opens precisely when it’s meant to. As such, I also believe the answer to why it happens is in tandem with Divine Timing: You’re leveling up.
Known as “Seers” (think about what an eye does- it sees) people whose Third Eye is open are able to see things invisible to the human eye: auras, energy entities, the illusion of our reality, etc. It is also believed that an opened Third Eye lends to being more intuitive and wiser.
THE SIGNS OF AN OPENING THIRD EYE
Now that we’ve covered the basics of what the Third Eye is and what it’s thought to do, here are nine signs that yours could be opening.
1. YOU’VE BEEN FEELING PULLED TO SEEK A HIGHER PURPOSE
As with anything in this world, there are a lot of different schools of thought concerning the Third Eye. It certainly doesn’t make it any easier to understand with its very nature rooted in esotericism. Some believe that you must own an old soul in order to access your Third Eye. Others say that everyone can do it.
This brings us to the first sign of an opening. You notice that you’ve been driven to seek a higher purpose in your life where there was none before. The urge to make sudden changes in relation to not only things personal to you, but your interconnectedness to those around you, your community, is a HUGE sign of your Third Eye opening.
Where once you paid no mind, you may start to feel your focus shift to. Those passions you once put aside or moved to the back burner are now getting your full attention. For instance, let’s say you spent hours in your youth playing the piano. Your fingers had to be pried from the keys by your mother to have you set the table for supper. Practice made perfection and fueled your soul. As you grew older, that flame was snuffed out by puberty and peer pressure. And then all of a sudden, you’re being drawn back in by memorized melodies and the feeling of necessity.
Where once you were told this calling of yours was unattainable, pointless, unable to provide financially, etc. you now just know the truth. It’s your calling and by pursuing it, it’s also your contribution to positively influence community and society.
2. YOU’RE EXPERIENCING AN INTUITION UPGRADE
Regardless of your normal level of intuition, whether it be nonexistent to off the charts powerful, you notice yours got an upgrade.
But what is this intuition we’re referring to anyway? Simply put, intuition can be “just knowing” something or having a “gut feeling” about a person or situation. It’s a fabulous tool to have to help guide us on our evolutionary path of spirituality.
With an intuitive boost where suddenly you just know how someone is feeling or what they’re going to say next or who’s going to show up is a HUGE sign that your Third Eye is opening. Don’t fear it. This is a good thing!
3. PRESSURE BETWEEN THE EYES/RECURRING HEADACHES
Some say this is the first sign of a Third Eye opening. Being physical in nature, it’s definitely hard not to take notice. But this isn’t the case for everyone. Also, the pressure and intensity of headaches will vary from person to person as well.
It is said that pressure and headaches happen during an opening due to an excess of energy. It can be remedied with grounding exercises like barefoot nature walks or gentle meditations on grass or under a tree. Think of any physical activity that will allow for the release of this energy.
Another good way to approach this discomfort is imagining a seedling emerging from soil, bursting forth and sprouting. Growth is uncomfortable, but necessary. Your Third Eye is opening – changing who you are at a spiritual level – and without this discomfort, it wouldn’t happen.
Honoring this process with an approach of understanding is imperative to aid in your Third Eye opening.
4. YOU’RE EXPERIENCING VIVID AND/OR LUCID DREAMS
Another big sign that your Third Eye is opening is communication through the dream world. Not only will you experience ultra vivid, clear dreams or lucid dreaming (you’re aware that you’re dreaming and you can control some, if not all, aspects) but you will start to receive messages from your Spirit Guides and Angels.
The nature of these messages can be anything in nature, from emotional issues holding you back to notions of your future. Start keeping a dream journal and look at these message through a lens of action. What can you do to heal that emotional wound or sculpt a different future than what was presented?
These signs from the dream world should absolutely be paid attention to. Notice people, places, and things and see if they begin to manifest and correlate in the physical world. Treat them as a guide map and keep track of the correspondence between the two worlds.
5. YOU’RE PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU PUT INTO YOUR BODY
Everything in the plane of existence is energy. Your side table, the family cat, that plastic bag stuck in your neighbor’s tree – everything. Food, too. It’s vibrational frequency can be felt more once our Third Eye starts to open.
When this happens, you may start to notice you aren’t craving the dead, deep fat fried chicken sandwich void of nutrients and substance. Where once you craved this type of food, your body no longer wants it. Just as your Third Eye is going through growing pains, you feel the correspondence in your physical body as it recalibrates its own vibrational frequency.
It’s totally normal to want to consume more natural foods like fruits and vegetables as your energy source than foods that have the capacity to damage us on a cellular and spiritual level. So the shift to gravitate towards nourishment rather than indulgent, unsupportive foods is a natural step in this awakening.
6. YOUR CLAIRVOYANT ABILITIES BEGIN TO SHOW THEMSELVES
Clairvoyance or “one who sees clearly” is a power of recognizing things not present to the senses. So things that aren’t here, now, right in front of us can be perceived by those with this gift. These could be things like a warning to keep you from going to a specific place. The opposite would be a sign to take part in an event that will yield positive influences on your life.
It’s easy to see the connection between your Third Eye opening and clairvoyance. After all, ‘there’s more than meets the eye’ describes this phenomena perfectly. As such, it is imperative to treat this gift with respect. It may be scary at first, but it’s meant to guide you along the Divine Path, like the other signs on this list.
7. THE SYNCHRONICITIES ARE ALL AROUND YOU
I believe in the saying “There’s no such thing as coincidences.” In fact, I’ve gone most of my life with this belief. I find it fascinating the connections, no matter how small, I see in everyday happenstance.
The term synchronicity first coined by psychologist Carl Jung refers to meaningful chance experiences that mysteriously happen in your life. Once you start to pay attention to these synchronicities, you start to see that they hold too much significance to not be seen as such.
Probably the most common example is seeing repeating numbers like 11:11 on the clock or 1111 on an address you pass on the way to the store. Another is seeing a specific animal over and over and then coming to learn it means an unexpected visitor will arrive. Suddenly, you have unplanned company knocking at your door.
As your Third Eye opens, you’ll see more and more of this phenomena. As people show up on your path, you realize the Universe has sent them in part for your spiritual development and in part to keep you going a specific way.
Synchronicities are here to help us. The more you become aware of them, the more you’ll smile and say, “Thank you, Universe!”
8. PATTERNS AND LIGHTS APPEAR WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES
Where once there was only darkness, you now start to see colors and shapes when you close your eyes. It’s like there’s a kaleidoscope hidden under your eyelids. These lights and patterns shift and turn, move under the surface like nothing you’ve experienced before. The most common colors reported being seen are whites and blues.
Some think this is due to that excess of energy we were talking about in relation to an increase in pressure or headaches. Others say these can be orbs of light from the spirit world. While the source of these lights and patterns are debatable, an increase in them is linked with the Third Eye opening.
9. AN INCREASE IN SENSITIVITY TO SOUND AND LIGHT
If you think about it, the Third Eye being open is like getting a whole new sense. So in turn, it’s logical to believe that with this new sense comes an increase in perception of things. Where once you enjoyed going to concerts or theme parks, the thought of being surrounded by shouting children or pyrotechnics and loud sound systems now completely turn you off.
A reason beyond receiving a new sense is that there is an expansion in your consciousness. You’re not only able to receive more information through the sense of sight and sound physically, but spiritually too.
IN CONCLUSION…
Everyone’s experience of their Third Eye opening is different. Some of these may apply to you, while another person receives all of them very intensely. This doesn’t mean that your Third Eye is opening “incorrectly” or it’s not going to fully actualize. We are all unique on our own path on our own Divine Timeline.
This post is to give you some insight into what could be happening with you spiritually if you’re experiencing any of these events. Always remember that if it ever gets to be too overwhelming for you, take a deep breath, do a little meditation, reach out and trust the Universe.
