Angel Magick: Expectation vs Reality

Angel magick expectation versus reality

To kick off 2022 and continue my ongoing series of Expectation vs Reality, what better place to begin than with angel magick. Their place and understanding in the world of modern magick and witchcraft varies depending upon who you talk to. In this post, I hope to sort through the different stances on working with angels in the craft. Let’s begin!

  1. Expectation: You have to be a Christian in order to work with angels
Reality: The concept of angels existed before Christianity

The modern idea of angels is rooted mostly in the Bible’s Old Testament. Often found there, the Hebrew word ‘malach’ translates to mean ‘messenger’ – which angels essentially were. However, the concept of angels comes before Judaism. These celestial messengers can be traced back to ancient Sumeria, Babylonia, Egypt, Persia, and Greece.

One of the oldest world religions known as Zoroastrianism comes from ancient Greece. This belief gives us both the concept of angels and the idea of Magi – “wise men” – who were more akin to fortune tellers and astrologers. In fact, the word ‘magic’ is derived from Magi.

The expectation that angels only belong to Christianity is easily overturned. The reality of angelic witchcraft is that plenty of practitioners work with angels in their everyday casting who are decidedly not part of the Christian faith.

  1. Expectation: Angels are all ‘Light and Love’
Reality: Angelic magick is powerful and chaotic

Some practitioners choose to start working with angels because they are under the impression that angel magick is ‘safer’ than other witchcraft paths. While angels may be depicted as humans with a pair of wings sprouting from between the shoulder blades or a chubby blonde baby gazing down upon the earth, their true form and power goes way beyond what our mortal minds can even conceive.

Touching back on the Christian perception of angels, the Catholic Church explicates that angels are spirits in the absence of a physical body. Depending upon the order that an angel belongs to, their appearance can be anything from conjoined wings covered in eyes to multiple faces made up of different creatures.

While it’s easy to see why angels give the perception of being all ‘Light and Love’, working with their energies and asking for their help requires a humbled respect and understanding. Despite their reputation, angels are a different kind of entity. Without judicious control and personal restraint, a practitioner could really find themselves up a metaphysical creek without a paddle.

This is not said to deter those interested from working with angels in their craft. Quite the contrary, really. Like I always say about any practitioner’s path, education is paramount. Whether or not you decide to initiate contact with them is always up to you. When you take the time to learn about their powers and how you can work WITH them, the reward is worth the effort.

  1. Expectation: You can use angel magick casually
    Reality: Angelic energy is transformational

When you think about it, angels have been around – and around and around – the block. This is certainly not their first rodeo. These ancient entities know who they are and how they work. So much so that there’s a reason we ask them for their help and not the other way around.

In this sense, it’s important to recognize just how powerful they are. If you’re looking for a casual relationship with an angel, it’s best to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a dramatic shift in your life and need serious support, angel magick could be your answer.

IN CONCLUSION…

Again, it’s imperative that I reiterate the importance of education. Do your research. Read more to learn more. Find out everything you can about angels, particularly the ins and outs of their correspondences and the tried and true methods of other practitioners.

Do you work with angels in your craft? If so, are there any particular angels you’ve fostered a relationship with? Let me know in the comments! Bright Blessings and Happy Casting!
