As aforementioned in my post What Is Black Salt – “We hear a lot about the importance of salt in the magickal community, and rightfully so! On a chemical level, this mineral is largely comprised of two elements – sodium and chloride – that don’t occur on their own anywhere in nature. That alone makes salt pretty special.”
Salt is a powerful ingredient, easily obtained and found in most witches’ cabinets. In this post we explore the metaphysical and transcendental properties of sea salt, the many deities and spirits you can use this mineral to work with, and why you might want to add it to your arsenal.
WHAT IS SEA SALT?

Salt that comes from the sea is – as you’ve probably guessed – sea salt. It is made through the process of evaporation. Once the water has dispersed, the leftover mineral is sea salt.
DIFFERENT NAMES

Sea salt is also known as brine, bay salt, sel de mer, sale marino, and solar salt.
ELEMENTS OF EARTH AND WATER

As salt in general represents the element of Earth, sea salt takes things a step further by also representing the element of Water. You can use sea salt in your workings interchangeably when an either Earth or Water representative is called for.
It is important to note that some practitioners disagree with this practice, saying that sea salt can only be used to represent Water. As with everything, this is YOUR craft and YOUR path. If after sufficient research has been done and you feel this speaks to you, then by all means include it in your practice.
WHAT IS SEA SALT USED FOR?

Outside of the blanket uses for salt, this magickal mineral does wonders in consecration work, protection rites, and purification spells. In particular, if you find yourself on the other side of an emotional dispute or argument, using sea salt for purifying the area is highly recommended.
Use sea salt as an offering to water spirits and deities. The following is a pretty exhaustive list of entities (both presiding over salt and fresh waters) and can be worked/exhaulted with sea salt.

OTHER USES FOR SEA SALT
Please note that the following is not an exhaustive list of magickal uses for sea salt, by any means. This list is just to provide a few examples of how to incorporate the mineral into your workings.
- Sea salt makes a great addition to spell jars and other vessel magick, bags, and herbal pillows
- Blend charged moon water and sea salt to amplify purification
- Use in bath spells for auric cleansing
- Use in magickal sprays to boost purification
- Use in foot soaks for purging negative attachments
- Sprinkle sea salt across thresholds and windowsills as a way to ward your home
- Cleansing crystals and other magickal tools (be sure to research which crystals can stand salt!)
- Place open containers of salt throughout the home as a vacuum for negative energies (be wary of this method if you have pets or small children in the home!)
IN CONCLUSION…
There you have it, Witches! Do you use sea salt in your workings? Any particular way that you’ve noticed is especially potent? Let me know in the comments! Bright Blessings and Happy Casting!
