Incense magick is touted as an archaic artform. Utilized by practitioners for thousands of years in ancient cultures, it is no wonder that incense is a staple in modern practice today. In this post, we will explore 7 different ways in which you can incorporate incense in your witchcraft if you aren’t using it already.
Without further ado, here are 7 ways to use incense for a boost in your magickal practice!
- CLEAR YOUR MIND BEFORE CASTING
Have you ever tried to cast in the wrong headspace? I’m certainly guilty of this! Not so much anymore as I’ve been practicing magick for such a long time, but this doesn’t mean I haven’t made my fair share of mistakes. Luckily, you can use incense to help clear your mind before casting.
Practitioners for millennia have been utilizing incense for a variety of purposes that include calming the mind. Create your own ritual of burning some frankincense and meditating to get yourself prepped for spellwork.
- BURN AS OFFERINGS TO DEITIES
I’ve been working with Hecate for longer than I can recall. Part of my offerings to the Goddess is incense. This I feel is something that takes no exponential effort on my part, yet it’s something I do to connect with and honor her.
To take this a step further, do some research into what kind of incense your deities prefer. Aim to have it on hand for them, and not just when you are asking them for their favor. Remember – working with deities is a two-way street!
- CONNECT WITH YOUR FOREBEARS FOR ANCESTERAL MAGICK
Burning incense to connect with your forebears is an excellent way to boost your craft. After all, they are here to help and guide us and want to see us succeed! Incense works as a fantastic offering for the deceased and can aid them in crossing the veil.
- PURIFICATION PURPOSES
First things first, let’s clarify the difference between cleansing and purifying. Simply put, cleansing is maintaining that which has already been purified. It’s the difference between a deep clean and day-to-day chores for upkeep.
I purify my house on the New Moon’s Eve and then perform cleansing throughout the rest of the month for upkeep. Incense plays a part in this purification process and I make sure to open at least one window during the act. The smoke produced by lighting the cone or stick acts as a carrier for energy to attach itself to. As the smoke gets drawn out of the house, it dissipates into another realm where the energy is neutralized.
- BURN TO ATTRACT SPECIFIC ENERGIES
You can supercharge your spellwork and attract specific energies by choosing associated incense. By being thoughtful and researching magickal herbs and their correspondences, you will know which ingredients to look for in formulated blends. This way the incense will aid you in fueling your personal power as you cast towards your goal.
- SMOKE SCRYING
Have you tried to read the Tarot or swing a pendulum in hopes of divining, but nothing seems to come of it? Perhaps smoke scrying is for you! Also known as Capnomancy or Libanomancy, the reader gazes on rising smoke from lit incense and then interprets the patterns. Sometimes diviners user their hands to manipulate the smoke before reading the omens. You could even develop your own brand of smoke scrying!
- BURN TO REPRESENT ALL OF THE ELEMENTS
The four elements of Earth, Air, Water, and Fire are all important representations of nature used by many practitioners in their craft. Incense can be used in order to represent them all:
- Earth = herbs and organic matter grown to make the incense
- Air = smoke that moves through the atmosphere
- Water = the element used to make combustible incense
- Fire = used to light the incense
This comes in really handy if you find yourself traveling and wanting to set up a makeshift altar. By using incense, you eliminate the need for four separate representatives if that is how you practice.
